Maibelle Shumate Harris, Mother's Day 1952

May Belle Shumate was born in Rockcastle County Kentucky in 1885.  She was the firstborn of Nathan M. Shumate and Margaret (Maggie) Adams.   Her mother died in 1896 and her father followed her in 1899.  After the death of her parents, she and her sisters, Virginia and Louise, lived with their uncle Quincy Shumate and family in Newbern Tennessee.  She married Newton Temple Harris of Tarrant County Texas and changed the spelling of her name to Maibelle.  She and Temple had five children.

This picture was taken on Mother's day 1952.  Maibelle must've been remembering her own mother and father on this date because she wrote the following on the back of the picture:

"This vase, one of a pair my father, Nathan M. Shumate, gave my mother Margaret Adams before they were married in Mt. Vernon Kentucky, 1882.  This picture taken Mothers Day May 1952, Maibelle Shumate Harris, Ft. Worth, Tex."

Maibelle Shumate Harris died of colon cancer June 14, 1960.

Orlean Scott - 4 months old, 1893

We came across another picture of Orlean Scott, one of the Scott cousins from Gainesville, Texas.  The first image we found of Orlean she was 6 years old.  This one is a baby picture taken December 1, 1893 and was sent to Fannie Moran, just like the first one was. Orlean was born in 1893 and died in 1979.  The Moran children called her "Annie Orlean."  My husband explained that  "Annie" is really a corruption of "Auntie" and they called one of their Irvine aunts "Annie Ir."  Pronounce the Ir the same as Irvine but without the "vine."

I don't know what Orlean looked like as an adult but she was cute as a bug when she was 6 months old!

Marion Agnes Moran, circa 1886/87

Marion Agnes Moran was the youngest child of John W. Moran and Sophia Riley Gunn.  She was born in 1885 in Dresden Tennessee.   This picture was taken about 1886/87 and the notation at the bottom says "Marion, To Grandpa with a Kiss."  Take note on the right side of the picture and you'll see an arm reaching across the back of the chair most likely holding Marion by the dress so she doesn't tumble out of the chair!

The Grandpa note would be referring to Lyman Taft Gunn, her maternal grandfather because her paternal grandfather, James Henderson Moran, passed away in 1843.  Lyman Gunn was born in Massachusetts and was a prominent dentist in Nashville.  Many of the Gunn's are buried in Nashville's City Cemetery although most of the headstones are missing.  Lyman Gunn and his second wife, Mary Ann Hall, were living in the Moran home in Dresden at the time of his death.  After his death Mary Ann Gunn moved to Boston and is buried in Forest Hills Cemetery in Suffolk County Massachusetts.  Lyman passed away in 1890, just a few short years after this photo was taken and is buried in Nashville's City Cemetery.

I've posted the photo as we found it but I also did some touch up work to get rid of some of the black spots and stains that are on the original and I've included the "after" image as well.

Picture as it was found Oct, 2011.
